Where: RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California

The Oakland Athletics are loaded with confidence as they resume the Bay Bridge Series by hosting the San Francisco Giants on Saturday for the first of a two-game set after sweeping the New York Yankees in three contests. Oakland entered Friday in a virtual tie with Tampa Bay at the top of the American League wild card standings and one-half game ahead of Cleveland after winning seven of its last eight contests - a stretch that started with a victory over San Francisco.

“You keep looking at the scoreboard, and the Rays keep winning. It just tells you that we know we have to play well for five more weeks,” the Athletics' Mark Canha told reporters. “There’s no letting up. This is going to be a fight. We have to keep doing this for five weeks. We’re not in this to slip into the wild card and play a wild card game. We’re in this to win the World Series.” Canha is 12-for-28 with two home runs, eight RBIs and four runs scored during a seven-game hitting streak that has helped Oakland (74-53) soar to a season-high 21 games above .500. The Giants had a golden opportunity to thrust themselves into the thick of the wild card race but were swept in a three-game series by the Cubs in Chicago this week and have dropped four in a row. San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner is coming off his first loss in more than two months as he takes the ball Saturday opposite Chris Bassitt, who is on a career-best roll.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (8-8, 3.72 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Chris Bassitt (9-5, 3.61)

Bumgarner allowed four runs, six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings of a 6-1 loss at Arizona on Sunday. The 30-year-old North Carolina native was 5-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his previous 10 starts since a setback at Dodger Stadium on June 20. The Oakland lineup is batting a collective .152 against Bumgarner, who is 5-2 with a 4.32 ERA in eight starts against the Athletics after a 3-2 victory Aug. 13 when he yielded one run while striking out nine in seven innings.

Bassitt permitted three runs, eight hits and two walks over six innings of an 8-4 victory over Houston on Aug. 17. “You go through dips and valleys basically throughout the year,” the 30-year-old Ohio native, who is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his last four starts, told reporters. “I think in the last month, I’ve felt pretty physically strong.” Bassitt lost in his only appearance versus San Francisco, allowing two runs in a 2-1 road loss July 25, 2015.

WALK-OFFS

1. Oakland's Matt Chapman needs one home run to join Sal Bando and Eric Chavez as the only Athletics' third basemen to hit 30 or more home runs in a season.

2. San Francisco OF Kevin Pillar (19), OF Mike Yastrzemski (17) and 3B Evan Longoria (16) lead the club in home runs this season. The last time the Giants had three players hit at least 20 home runs was in 2006, when it had four (Barry Bonds, 26; Ray Durham, 26; Moises Alou, 22; Pedro Feliz, 22).

3. Oakland starters have won 53 games this season - one more than they totaled in each of the past two years.
